the growth
a haiku poem about spiritual growth
the growth in the dark like a seed breaks through the ground and grows into art
About
I love how natural realities often serve as imagery for spiritual realities. The journey of growth from seed to plant is one example of this.
Like seeds are planted in the dark depths of soil, we humans are born into a deeply dark world. Because God permitted us to have free will and to make choices that go against his perfect will, sin and brokenness entered the world and will be here to stay until Christ returns to make the world anew and eradicate all sin and evil forever.
Yet, as we joyfully anticipate the return of our Lord, we are equipped with the hope and strength we need to grow closer to God as we live in the midst of darkness. As we turn to him throughout our lives, we are gracefully empowered by him to persevere in the face of the trials we endure.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Our stories of breakthrough into new realms of hope and joy paint a beautiful picture of growth in the face of adversity. God is glorified in and through this beauty, as he is the one who has led us through it all and will continue leading us through it all until the very end, when we will rest in eternal glory with Christ.
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
- 1 Peter 5:10
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
- Romans 8:18
Prayer
Lord, thank you for never leaving nor forsaking us in life’s darkest moments. Thank you for the hope of eternity you have placed in our hearts. Thank you that we can grow closer to you in the thick of trials, that we can turn to you to transform our stories of darkness and brokenness into beautiful works of art. Help us to grow more like you as we are rooted and strengthened in and through our faith in you. Amen.
