your will
#4 in a haiku poem series about reflecting on a new year
it's perfect and good. help me to seek after it closely, like Jesus.
About
“I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” - Psalm 40:8, ESV
The greatest resolution we can ever have, the thing we can resolve to do above all else, is to seek first the will of God. We don’t know all the details of God’s will, but one thing we do know is that his ways and purposes embody goodness and perfection.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” - Romans 12:2, ESV
Jesus himself modeled a lifestyle centered around submission to the Father’s will. We will not submit to it perfectly because unlike Jesus, we aren’t perfect, but we can submit to it faithfully with the help and guidance of the Spirit. We can trust that all year long, regardless of what does or doesn’t come to pass, all things will work together according to the good purposes our Father has in store.
“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” - John 5:30, ESV
“And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” - Matthew 26:39, ESV
“And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:27-28, ESV
